Mymensingh:A court has sentenced three individuals to death and ten others to life imprisonment for the murder of farmer Shafiqul Islam Sabir in 2015 in Nandail upazila.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the verdict was delivered by Judge Md Shamsuddin of the Additional District and Sessions Judge Court-1 in the afternoon. The death row convicts are brothers Mozammel Haque Swapan, Apon Mia, and Ripon Mia alias Jibu, with Ripon currently absconding.
The ten others sentenced to life imprisonment include Abu Bakar Siddique, Kanchan Mia, Rubel, Parvez, Mofazzal Hossain, Kashid, Al-Amin, Sumon Mia, Nayan Mia, and Asadul. Each has been fined Tk 50,000, with an additional year of imprisonment if the fine is not paid. Asadul is also absconding.
Public Prosecutor Advocate Anwarul Aziz Tutul confirmed the verdict. Case documents revealed that Sabir was hacked to death on February 25, 2015, following a land dispute. The attack occurred at a cloth shop on the eastern bank of Charbelamari Chowrasta Ferry Ghat in the Nandail police station area.
Sabir's family filed a murder case at Nandail Police Station. After more than a decade of legal proceedings, the court has now delivered its verdict against all 13 accused individuals.
