Dhaka: Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Iqbal Hassan Mahmood Tuku assured today that the country has a sufficient stock of fuel, countering concerns amidst ongoing global geopolitical instability. He emphasized ongoing national efforts to combat illegal hoarding activities.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Minister Tuku addressed the parliament, responding to a public notice by lawmaker M Shawkatul Islam. He stated that despite disruptions in global fuel supply due to the US-Israel conflict and Iran’s embargo on cargo movement through the Strait of Hormuz, Bangladesh maintains adequate fuel reserves. Currently, the country has a stock of 164,644 metric tons of diesel, with an additional 138,000 metric tons expected by the end of the month. Similarly, a substantial consignment of octane and petrol is also anticipated to arrive soon.

The minister noted that while fuel prices have surged in countries like Pakistan, India, Sri Lanka, Nepal, and Afghanistan, Bangladesh has managed to keep its prices stable. This decision aims to support industrial production, agricultural activities, and the livelihood of its citizens.

To ensure the availability of diesel for agricultural purposes, directives have been issued to distribute agriculture cards among farmers. Additionally, district magistrates are instructed to conduct mobile court operations against illegal hoarding, supported by monitoring teams from various government bodies.

Minister Tuku highlighted the ongoing efforts to curb illegal hoarding, which have resulted in the recovery of over 40.48 lakh liters of fuel and significant fines amounting to over Taka 1.25 crore. The government remains vigilant, with daily coordination meetings and the appointment of tag officers at fuel stations to ensure a smooth supply chain.
