Dhaka: National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery (NIBPS) today stated that four of the Milestone School jet crash victims they are treating are in critical condition, while the health ministry reported that 33 people, mostly students, have died in the tragedy. ‘They (the four) are kept in our ICU (Intensive Care Unit). Their condition is critical,’ NIPBS director Professor Dr. Nasir Uddin said.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, NIPBS, also known as the Burn Institute, discharged two more crash victims today, though 34 others remain under treatment at the specialized facility. Among those injured, six have sustained burns covering more than 30 percent of their bodies, the hospital director noted.

Uddin shared that four patients with burn wounds have been released from NIPBS after treatment. The two discharged today are Kazi Amjad Saeed (20) and Sabuja (40), an employee of the school. Amjad suffered burn injuries while volunteering in the rescue efforts. On a prior occasion, the institute released two Milestone students, Rafsi Akhter Rafia, 12, and Ayan Khan, 12.

The Health and Family Welfare Ministry announced that the July 21 crash has resulted in the deaths of 34 students, teachers, and others, alongside injuring numerous individuals. Doctors at the Burn Institute revealed that of the 34 patients being treated, 28 are children, and they anticipate that nine of these patients could fully recover.

Addressing the psychological impact, the NIPBS director mentioned that unit chiefs are engaging with burn victims twice daily, providing necessary psychological support. One patient has been transferred to the National Institute of Mental Health for further care.

Since the jet crash, the burn institute has attended to a total of 56 patients with burn injuries, with 17 having succumbed to their injuries.
