Dhaka: Information and Broadcasting Minister Zahir Uddin Swapon today emphasized that Rabindranath Tagore’s influence extended far beyond literature, music, and the arts, highlighting his significant observations on society, economy, science, and the universe. Speaking as the chief guest at a discussion hosted by the National Theatre Hall of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy, the minister celebrated Tagore’s 165th birth anniversary by acknowledging his profound social consciousness.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the minister noted that a creative individual could maintain deep observation, philosophical insight, and social consciousness even amid the turbulent waves of contemporary politics, citing Tagore as a prime example. Swapon remarked on Tagore’s cautious political mindset, particularly following the 1917 Russian Revolution, when the world was influenced by socialist philosophy. Tagore’s “Letters from Russia” highlighted the conflict between the mechanical nature of communism and the eternal rhythm of human nature, following his visit to Russia.
Tagore’s thoughts, the minister stated, deeply influenced leaders like Mahatma Gandhi and Jawaharlal Nehru during the anti-British movement. Swapon also referred to Tagore’s dialogue with scientist Albert Einstein, marveling at how Tagore’s reflections on the world beyond science continue to astonish people today.
The event, chaired by Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy Director General Rezauddin Stalin, saw contributions from prominent figures such as Dhaka University Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. A B M Obaidul Islam, who delivered the keynote speech. State Minister for Social Welfare Farzana Sharmin Putul and President of Bishwa Shahitya Kendro Professor Abdullah Abu Sayeed also addressed the gathering as special guests, among others.
