Commonwealth Secretary-General Urges Restraint Following Violence in Bangladesh

Dhaka: Commonwealth Secretary-General Shirley Botchwey has expressed deep concern over recent violence in Bangladesh, mourning the death of Sharif Osman Hadi and urging restraint, adherence to the rule of law, and protection for all, including media personnel.



According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Botchwey issued a statement in which she joined the people of Bangladesh in mourning the loss of Sharif Osman Hadi and conveyed her sincere condolences to his family and loved ones. She emphasized her concern about the situation in Bangladesh following recent incidents of violence in Dhaka and other areas.



Botchwey stressed the importance of respecting the rule of law and called on authorities to ensure the safety of all individuals, including members of the media. She acknowledged the interim government’s commitment to holding those responsible for the violence accountable and called for restraint and a rejection of hatred.



In her statement, Botchwey also appealed for calm and urged all involved to exercise prudence and forbearance during this critical time.
