Dhaka: The Commerce Ministry has revoked the licence of the Bangladesh Agrochemical Manufacturers Association (BAMA) and mandated its merger with the Bangladesh Crop Protection Association (BCPA). This decision comes four years after BAMA was initially granted its licence. The BCPA is the main trade body representing agrochemical importers in the country. According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the ministry released a gazette notification stating that a unified organisation would better represent businesses involved in the pesticide sector. The objectives of BAMA and BCPA were found to be similar, prompting the decision for consolidation. The gazette highlighted that the majority of BAMA members were previously affiliated with the BCPA, with many continuing their membership. The ministry noted that having multiple trade organisations within the same sector led to challenges in the import, production, distribution, and marketing of pesticides.
