Coast Guard on alert to prevent any shipping as Sitrang approaches

Members of Bangladesh Coast Guard (BCG) under its East Zone have been patrolling the coastal ghat areas to ensure that no vessel can go to sea in adverse weather conditions due to Cyclone Sitrang.

 

In the latest bulletin from the Bangladesh Meteorological Department, all deep-sea vessels have been asked to stay at the ghats near the coast.

 

In order to implement the instructions, members of BCG East Zone have been conducting its regular patrolling in coastal ghat areas, including, Chittagong Sadar Ghat, Patenga No- 15 Ghat, Bhatiari, Sandwip Guptachhara Ghat, Baharchhara Shyamalapur Ghat, Cox’s Bazar Nuniyachhara Ghat, Qutubdia Darbar Ghat, St Martin Jetty Ghat, Shahpuri Jaliapara Ghat and Teknaf Bazar Ghat to ensure that no vessel can go to sea in adverse weather conditions.

 

Besides, fishermen along with presidents of boat owners’ associations of all ghats are being warned about the depression in the sea. Mariners of all levels are being warned of the pressure on the sea through notifying local officials and urging the coastal public to evacuate to nearby shelters and safe places.

 

Coast Guard rescue teams are also ready to deal with any post-disaster situation, said Lietenend Kazi Al Amin, media officer of BCG East Zone.

 

Cyclone Sitrang is likely to intensify further, move in a north-northeasterly direction and cross Barishal-Chattogram coast near Khepupara by midnight Monday or early morning Tuesday, said the latest Met office bulletin.
