Jashore: BanglaFact, the fact-checking and media research team of the Press Institute Bangladesh (PIB), has identified as a false claim that a Hindu community in Jashore district was set on fire, after footage of a fire caused by an electrical short circuit in Rangamati was circulated as evidence.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, BanglaFact stated that the claim about a Hindu community in Jashore being set on fire was untrue. The footage in question actually depicts a fire resulting from an electrical short circuit in the Rangamati district.
The false claim suggested that terrorists had targeted a Hindu community in Manirampur upazila, Jashore. However, the incident actually occurred on August 3 at Gathachhara area of Mainimukh Union under Langadu upazila in Rangamati, where a fire broke out due to an electrical fault, affecting a residential house and three furniture factories.
Fact-checking organizations have observed an increasing trend of false claims about Bangladesh spreading through social media platforms operated both domestically and internationally, as well as through specific Facebook pages.
