Dhaka: Information and Broadcasting Minister Zahir Uddin Swapan has announced a significant reduction in the VVIP protocol convoy of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, marking a notable improvement in the city’s traffic management. Speaking at a press briefing, Swapan highlighted that the Prime Minister’s simplified travel arrangements have effectively alleviated the public’s commuting hardships.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the press briefing took place at the Information and Broadcasting Ministry’s conference room at Bangladesh Secretariat. The Minister elaborated on the reduction of the Prime Minister’s previously large protocol convoy, stating that long-established practices of extensive arrangements and stringent formalities at airport receptions and farewells have been streamlined.

Under the revised protocol, only a select group of officials-including one senior minister, the Chief Whip, the Cabinet Secretary, and the Principal Secretary to the Prime Minister-will attend airport occasions. Swapan noted that these changes have fostered a greater willingness among the public to adhere to traffic regulations.

The Minister also mentioned the abolition of special privileges for Members of Parliament as part of broader government reforms. ‘We will never again take duty-free cars, nor will we accept any government plots,’ Swapan stated, emphasizing the move to eliminate special facilities for MPs and restore public trust. He expressed optimism that MPs from other parties would support this initiative.

On administrative reforms, Swapan highlighted the Prime Minister’s commitment to work, mentioning that Rahman regularly attends office even on Saturdays, creating an energized work environment. The new policy mandates that cabinet ministers, state ministers, and officials at all levels begin their workday by 9 am, aiming to reduce state expenditure and enhance public confidence.
