Bangkok: Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus has expressed strong hope that there would be positive progress in resolving the tariff issue through talks with the US government.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Chief Adviser's Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam conveyed Yunus's optimism, stating, "We are studying it. Since it is negotiable, we will negotiate and I am sure we can craft out the best deal." Alam, speaking in Bangkok about the newly imposed 37 percent tariff by the US on Bangladeshi products, emphasized that the issue is still in the early stages of discussion. "We are reviewing it and we are hopeful that the steps we are taking will help make our relations with the US stronger in the coming days," he added.
Alam further mentioned that the interim government is aiming to reach a solution beneficial to both nations. "We will do something that will protect the interests of both the US and Bangladesh," he assured, highlighting ongoing communication with the US to resolve the matter.
Earlier, Alam noted that Bangladesh is also examining its tariffs on US-imported goods. "The National Board of Revenue is identifying options to rationalise tariffs expeditiously, which is necessary to address the matter," he shared on Facebook. He affirmed that the United States remains a close ally and the largest export market for Bangladesh.
The interim government has been collaborating with the US since the Trump Administration to bolster trade and investment ties. "Our ongoing work with the US government is expected to help address the tariff issue," Alam stated. Recently, the United States unveiled a 37 percent tariff on Bangladeshi imports as part of President Donald Trump's 'reciprocal tariff' policy.
