Dhaka: Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus today emphasized the importance of preserving the spirit of the Liberation War to inspire future generations. He asserted that while none of us is permanent, the legacy of the Liberation War must endure to educate the youth about the nation’s historical struggles for independence.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Prof Yunus made these remarks during a meeting at the State Guest House Jamuna with leaders and members of the Jatio Muktijoddha Council (Jamuka), Bangladesh Freedom Fighter Welfare Trust (BFFWT), and Bangladesh Muktijoddha Shongshod (BMS). Liberation War Affairs Adviser Faruk E Azam, Bir Protik, was also present at the meeting, as revealed by the Chief Adviser’s Press Wing.

The Chief Adviser highlighted the interim government’s immediate priority upon taking office-recognizing genuine freedom fighters and curbing the exploitation of their revered status. He noted that past attempts to exploit the respect accorded to freedom fighters for personal gain must be prevented in the future. Prof Yunus expressed gratitude for the opportunity to engage with the freedom fighters, emphasizing the sacred task of preserving and sharing the nation’s history with the new generation.

During the discussions, Liberation War Affairs Adviser Faruk E Azam criticized the previous government for creating discrimination and depriving genuine freedom fighters, leaving many hurt and disillusioned. He assured that efforts are underway to restore the lost image of the freedom fighters.

The meeting saw participation from Bangladesh Muktijoddha Sangsad (BMS) Central Command Council Convener Nayeem Jahangir and freedom fighter Captain (Retd) Nurul Huda, among others, who thanked Prof Yunus for his leadership and reforms. They expressed hope that the implementation of the July Charter and the referendum would safeguard Bangladesh’s independence and prevent the return of fascism.

The freedom fighters also lamented the erosion of their honor over the past sixteen years, with many hesitating to identify themselves due to doubts about their authenticity. Jamuka Member Captain (Retd) Nurul Huda acknowledged the restored freedom of speech under Prof Yunus’s leadership, which had not been enjoyed in the country for decades.

Prof Yunus urged the freedom fighters to remain resilient against attempts to distort historical narratives. He stressed the need for organizational assets to be utilized for preserving the Liberation War’s legacy and ensuring the country’s welfare. As the nation approaches elections, he called for continued citizen engagement in upholding the nation’s democratic principles.

The meeting included notable figures such as Major General (Retd) Azizur Rahman, Bir Uttam, and other distinguished members from various freedom fighter organizations, highlighting the collective commitment to preserving the Liberation War’s enduring legacy for future generations.
