Dhaka: The International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking will be observed in Bangladesh tomorrow, aligning with global efforts to combat drug abuse. The day has been marked annually since 1989 on June 26 to reinforce action and cooperation towards a world free of drug abuse.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus issued a message emphasizing the importance of observing this day in Bangladesh alongside other countries. He highlighted the complex nature of drug trafficking and abuse, noting that a significant portion of the country’s youth is losing their potential due to drug involvement. Dr. Yunus underscored the adverse effects of drug abuse on public health, the economy, and national peace and security.

To combat drug proliferation in the country, Dr. Yunus called for all law enforcement agencies, including the Department of Narcotics Control, Police, RAB, BGB, Coast Guard, and field administration, to collaborate with professionalism. He also stressed the necessity of public awareness and involvement in eradicating drugs, advocating for a social movement to foster a drug-free Bangladesh.

Dr. Yunus urged the government, NGOs, civil society, educators, guardians, religious figures, students, healthcare professionals, social workers, and media to unite in addressing the drug issue. He expressed his hopes for the success of the initiatives planned for the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking 2025.
