Dhaka: Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus today participated in the namaj-e-janaza of Shaheed Sharif Osman Hadi held at the South Plaza of the Sangsad Bhaban. The ceremony, attended by advisers of the interim government, senior officials, and hundreds of thousands of citizens, was a moment of collective prayer for the forgiveness of Shaheed Hadi’s soul.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Hadi’s elder brother, Mawlana Dr. Abu Bakar Siddique, led the namaj-e-janaza. The gathering also heard from Prof Yunus and Religious Affairs Adviser A F M Khalid Hossain, who delivered a speech and read out a biography of Shaheed Hadi. Abdullah Al Zaber, Member Secretary of Inqilab Mancha, was also among the speakers.
The South Plaza and Manik Mia Avenue were scenes of both mourning and calls for justice as attendees expressed their emotions. While some mourners shed tears for Hadi, others vocalized their demands for accountability, chanting against fascism and hegemony and calling for justice in Hadi’s killing.
Sharif Osman Hadi was a prominent figure in the July Uprising and a spokesperson for Inqilab Mancha. He sustained gunshot wounds on December 12 while traveling in a battery-run auto-rickshaw in Paltan. Initially treated at Dhaka Medical College Hospital, Hadi was later transferred to Evercare Hospital. On December 15, he was flown to Singapore for advanced treatment but succumbed to his injuries on Thursday night, deeply affecting the nation.
Hadi, who was also a hopeful independent candidate for Dhaka-8, is remembered as a steadfast opponent of fascism and hegemony, earning him the title of “an immortal soldier of the struggle.”
