Dhaka: Police this noon submitted a charge sheet against alleged rapist and killer Sohel Rana and his wife, Swapna Akter, in the sensational rape and murder case of eight-year-old Ramisa Akter in the capital's Pallabi area. Investigation officer and sub-inspector Wahiduzzaman filed the charge sheet with the general registration wing of the Pallabi Police Station at the CMM court, deputy commissioner Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP's) prosecution wing Miah Mohammad Ashish Bin Hasan told BSS.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the government, on May 23, appointed Advocate Azizur Rahman Dulu as Special Public Prosecutor to conduct the sensational Ramisa murder case on behalf of the state before the Dhaka Metropolitan Children Violence Suppression Tribunal. This is a recently constituted tribunal dealing exclusively with cases of violence against children. The appointment came shortly after Prime Minister Tarique Rahman's announcement that the maximum punishment for Ramisa's killer will be ensured within the next one month.

Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Md Asaduzzaman also stated that the government is committed to the speedy trial of the Ramisa murder case. "This case will be completed within the shortest possible time," he said while addressing newsmen at a workshop in the capital this morning.

Ramisa, a student of class 2 of Popular Model High School, was raped and subsequently beheaded by her neighbour, Sohel Rana, at his flat in Millat Camp area in Pallabi on May 19. Her father filed the case the following day, setting in motion the legal proceedings that have now led to the submission of the charge sheet against the accused couple.
