Dhaka: Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) AMM Nasir Uddin today emphasized that the Election Commission (EC) is steadfast in its mission to conduct free, fair, transparent, and credible elections, dismissing any claims that it is working to implement any external agenda.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the CEC made these remarks during a discussion commemorating the 7th National Voter Day at the Nirbachan Bhabahn auditorium in Agargaon. The event, which is being observed under the theme ‘Tomar Amar Bangladeshe, Vote Dibo Milemishe’, highlighted the EC’s dedication to upholding the democratic rights of Bangladesh’s 18 crore citizens.
Nasir Uddin underscored the importance of political consensus regarding the electoral code of conduct, urging voters to see it as their duty to exercise their franchise. “Vote is a right of the people, achieved through immense struggle. Now we are striving to uphold that right by organizing an acceptable election,” he remarked.
The CEC also highlighted the diversity of opinions among political leaders as a hallmark of democracy, while stressing the necessity of consensus among political parties. He warned against electoral manipulation, stating, “Someone may win in the election by manipulating the polls. But, finally, they cannot survive. history says this,” expressing hope that such attempts would be avoided in the future.
Election Commissioners Tahmida Ahmad and Brig Gen (Retd) Abdul Fazal Md Sanaullah also addressed the gathering. The updated voter list as of March 2, 2025, shows that Bangladesh has 12,18,32,274 eligible voters, comprising 6,33,61,615 males, 6,03,69,665 females, and 994 individuals of the third gender.
During the event, the CEC distributed smart NID cards to 13 youths injured during the July Uprising, who are currently receiving treatment at various hospitals. The day’s celebrations also included a procession that marched through different streets to mark Voter Day.
