Dhaka: Chief Adviser's High Representative Khalilur Rahman today stated that Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus' recent visit to China has laid a strong foundation for the bilateral relationship between the two nations for the coming decades.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the visit coincides with the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between China and Bangladesh, marking it as a significant event. Khalilur Rahman shared these insights at a press conference on the Chief Adviser's visit to China, held at the Foreign Service Academy in the city. Also present were the Executive Chairman of the Bangladesh Investment Development Authority (BIDA) and Bangladesh Economic Zones Authority (BEZA), Chowdhury Ashik Mahmud Bin Harun, and Chief Adviser's Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam.
Khalilur Rahman highlighted the high level of honor and inspiration Dr. Yunus and his delegation received from the Chinese authorities, emphasizing the positive reception from both sides. Bangladesh extended an invitation to Chinese companies to participate in the Teesta River Comprehensive Management and Restoration Project (TRCMRP), to which the Chinese side showed a favorable response.
The discussions also covered China's constructive role in promoting peace talks on Myanmar and addressing the issue of forcibly displaced people from the Rakhine State of Myanmar sheltered in Bangladesh. China praised Bangladesh's humanitarian assistance to these displaced individuals and supported efforts for a mutually acceptable resolution through friendly consultations. Furthermore, China assured continued support for the repatriation of Rohingyas.
In response to inquiries, Khalilur Rahman announced the establishment of four specialized hospitals in Kunming for Bangladeshis, with plans for a specialized hospital in Bangladesh.
Regarding investment ties, Chowdhury Ashik Mahmud Bin Harun indicated that the bilateral relationship is being nurtured to benefit both nations. He mentioned interactions with over 100 companies and their executives, showcasing Bangladesh as a favorable investment destination and discussing recent reforms to enhance the investment climate.
During the visit, agreements on "Economic and Technical Cooperation" and other areas such as cultural heritage, news exchange, media, sports, and health were signed between Bangladesh and China. Dr. Yunus expressed gratitude to Chinese President Xi Jinping and the Chinese people for their hospitality and extended an invitation to President Xi to visit Bangladesh.
The discussions reaffirmed both countries' commitment to the Five Principles of Peaceful Coexistence and their mutual support on vital concerns, with China adhering to non-interference in the internal affairs of Bangladesh. This mutual understanding aims to deepen political trust, develop strategic synergies, and enhance the China-Bangladesh Comprehensive Strategic Cooperative Partnership.
Dr. Yunus attended the Boao Forum for Asia Annual Conference 2025 and held bilateral talks with President Xi in Beijing. He was also honored with an honorary doctorate from Peking University, where he delivered a lecture.
