Gournadi: Information Minister Zahir Uddin Swapan today emphasized that canal excavation projects should not serve as a means for contractors and engineers to earn money, but rather ensure the water flow in canals.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Swapan highlighted that public funds must not be misappropriated, insisting that contractors and engineers are responsible for ensuring that canal water is directed towards agricultural land. He called upon local communities to monitor the water flow in the canals to ensure compliance. Swapan made these remarks during the inauguration of the two-kilometre long re-excavation work of Kutubpur Swanirbhar Canal in Nalchira Union of Gournadi Upazila.
He urged locals to inform him if government projects have not been beneficial, stating that he is willing to be held accountable. Swapan emphasized that there should be no interference from middlemen in these projects. Referring to the 13th general election held on February 12, he acknowledged the BNP's victory, attributing it to their strong grassroots support.
Swapan also stressed the significance of media independence, stating that a more independent and responsible media ensures government accountability. He noted that Prime Minister Tarique Rahman supports granting maximum freedom to the media to enhance governmental accountability through responsible journalism. Senior officials from the ministry and various government entities attended the event.
