Bogura: Election campaign activities are set to commence tomorrow for the Sherpur-3 general election and the Bogura-6 by-election, following the allocation of election symbols to candidates by the Election Commission (EC).

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, a total of six candidates, three from each constituency, will be competing in these elections. This information was confirmed by the Returning Officers of the two constituencies. Mohammad Jahangir Hossain, the Returning Officer for Sherpur-3, reported that Md. Mahmudul Haque Rubel of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) will campaign with the ‘Sheaf of Paddy’ symbol. Meanwhile, Md. Masudur Rahman, representing Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, will use the ‘Daripalla’ symbol. Additionally, a candidate from the Socialist Party of Bangladesh (Marxist) will participate with the ‘Scissors’ symbol. The election in Sherpur-3 was initially postponed due to the death of a Jamaat-e-Islami candidate, leading to a rescheduled election date.

In the Bogura-6 constituency, Returning Officer Md. Fazlul Karim stated that three candidates are also in contention for the by-election, and they received their election symbols today. Md. Rezaul Karim Badsha from the BNP will contest with the ‘Sheaf of Paddy’ symbol, while Md. Abidur Rahman of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami will use the ‘Daripalla’ symbol. Another candidate, representing the Bangladesh Development Party, will campaign with the ‘Cauliflower’ symbol. Karim noted that the election environment in Bogura-6 is currently positive.

The necessity for a by-election in Bogura-6 arose when Prime Minister Tarique Rahman vacated the seat after winning in two parliamentary constituencies during the national election on February 12. Rahman opted to retain the Dhaka-17 seat, thereby leaving Bogura-6 open. The EC subsequently declared the seat vacant and set a new election date.

According to the EC’s schedule, voting for both the Bogura-6 by-election and the Sherpur-3 general election will occur on April 9, with polls open from 7:30 am to 4:30 pm without interruption.
