Dhaka: A high-level review meeting was convened today to assess the country’s preparations for transitioning from a Least Developed Country (LDC) status to that of a developing country, chaired by Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus at the Chief Adviser’s Office (CAO) in Tejgaon.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the meeting focused on the progress of implementing 16 key decisions critical to the transition. The National Board of Revenue (NBR) is overseeing four of these decisions, while the Ministry of Industries is responsible for three, the Economic Relations Department for two, the Ministry of Commerce for three, and the Chief Adviser’s Office for four.

NBR Chairman Md Abdur Rahman Khan shared insights on the ongoing efforts to fully implement the National Single Window, with 19 bodies already integrated into the system. He also updated the Chief Adviser on the progress of the Tariff Policy 2023’s implementation work-plan.

The meeting also explored providing necessary support and incentives to sectors beyond the ready-made garment industry, emphasizing duty-free facilities for importing raw materials related to man-made fibers and machinery.

Additional discussions included the full operation of the Effluent Treatment Plant in Tanari Village, Savar, the launch of the API Park in Gazaria, Munshiganj, and updates to the industrial policy 2022.

Chief Adviser Prof Yunus highlighted the underutilization of the leather industry, stressing the need for a dedicated meeting to address its challenges. He urged the convening of another meeting within two months to identify strategies for Bangladesh’s transition from LDC status.

Finance Adviser Dr Salehuddin Ahmed, Industries Adviser Adilur Rahman Khan, Environment Adviser Syeda Rizwana Hasan, and other key government officials attended the meeting, underscoring the collaborative effort required for the country’s economic progress.
