Dhaka: Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus today reassured that the parliamentary election will be held in February next. “We want to hold a beautiful election which will be example for the nation and the world as well. We will do it Inshaallah,” he said. He was addressing as the chief guest the much-awaited historic signing ceremony of the July National Charter-2025 at the South Plaza of the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban this afternoon.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the Chief Adviser emphasized the importance of unity, which was also the guiding principle behind the signing of the July National Charter. He urged political leaders to work collectively to create an atmosphere conducive to a fair and festive election. “We will go towards the election with the tune of unity that led the signing of the charter. Keep the unity intact,” he stated, adding that the country risks reverting to the old system if the election is conducted haphazardly.
The Chief Adviser also mentioned that it is up to the political leaders to determine how the election will be conducted. Stressing Bangladesh’s capability to conduct a successful election, he said, “We will hold our election. None needs to show us the way.”
The event, chaired by Chief Adviser and Chairman of the National Consensus Commission Professor Dr. Muhammad Yunus, saw the participation of Commission Members Justice Md. Emdadul Haque, Safar Raj Hossain, Dr. Iftekharuzzaman, Dr. Badiul Alam Majumdar, and Dr. Md. Ayub Mia. The ceremony was conducted by Chief Adviser’s Special Assistant Monir Haidar and began at 4:25 pm in a festive manner.
At 5:05 pm, representatives from each political party, along with the Commission’s Vice-Chairman and members, signed the charter. The Chief Adviser signed the charter at 5:07 pm, followed by a display of the document. The event was attended by advisers of the interim government, representatives of political parties, senior officers of the armed forces, journalists, lawyers, teachers, and distinguished guests from home and abroad.
Commission’s Vice-Chairman Professor Dr. Ali Riaz delivered the welcome address. The ceremony concluded with a screening of a short documentary on enforced disappearances, killings, and the Shapla Massacre that occurred during the last 16 years of fascist rule.
Prominent political figures such as BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, National Standing Committee Member Salahuddin Ahmed, and representatives from various other parties were present. Families of martyrs, including Mir Mostafizur Rahman and Shamsi Ara Begum, also attended the event.
