Dhaka: Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus has underscored the necessity of precise hydrographic data for the development of nations, emphasizing its critical role in economic growth and security. Highlighting the significance of the Bay of Bengal, he stated that it is not only crucial for Bangladesh’s national economy and environmental balance but also for the economic prosperity of neighboring countries. Accurate hydrographic information, he noted, is indispensable for the development of the national economy.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the Chief Adviser made these remarks in a message marking the upcoming World Hydrography Day 2025. He conveyed that the interim government is aiming to transform Bangladesh into a productive and regional economic hub, for which detailed, updated, and precise hydrographic data is essential to efficiently harness marine resources.

Professor Yunus commended the efforts of the Hydrographic Department of the Bangladesh Navy, which is diligently conducting hydrographic surveys, preparing charts, and ensuring the safety of both local and foreign vessels. These efforts, he mentioned, align with international standards and are pivotal under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) for defining the country’s oceanic shelf and advancing the blue economy.

The Chief Adviser expressed hope that, beyond ensuring military and naval security, the Hydrographic Department will take a proactive role in developing seaports, conserving fishery resources, exploring oil and gas, and managing disasters in coastal areas. He stressed the importance of creating a sustainable maritime policy through accurate seabed mapping to strengthen the country’s economic foundation.

Professor Yunus called on hydrographic professionals in Bangladesh to enhance their professionalism, efficiency, and dedication to develop a comprehensive hydrographic database for the country’s maritime boundaries. He expressed satisfaction with Bangladesh’s participation in the global observation of World Hydrography Day 2025 and extended warm greetings to all organizers and participants, wishing success for the day’s events.

World Hydrography Day 2025 will be celebrated with the theme ‘Seabed Mapping: Enabling Ocean Action’, underscoring the critical need for accurate oceanic data.
