Dhaka: Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus has called upon the Department of Social Services to urgently reform its outdated systems and enhance digital transparency. He emphasized the need for prioritizing services for senior citizens and women, ensuring that benefits reach those truly in need.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the Chief Adviser made these remarks during a meeting with senior officials of the Department of Social Services at the State Guest House Jamuna. The meeting addressed key challenges facing the ministry, such as scams involving senior citizen allowances, outdated administrative models, and limited access to services.

Professor Yunus pointed out that the ministry still operates on a model from 2013, which urgently requires revision. He highlighted the prevalence of misinformation, which causes stress and confusion among the public, and stressed the importance of ensuring accurate listings and real solutions.

The Chief Adviser expressed concerns over the misuse of the system in the past, citing political interference as a factor that led to the unfair distribution of benefits. He noted that many individuals received allowances illegally due to political influence and emphasized the need to end such discrimination.

In addressing scams related to senior citizen allowances, Professor Yunus recommended aligning disbursements with data from the National ID (NID) system to prevent fraud. He further emphasized empowering girls through the ministry’s programs, particularly prioritizing skill-building opportunities for them.

The need for digital transformation was also stressed by the Chief Adviser, who suggested the development of a mobile app to compile all available services and information in one place, making them more accessible and transparent to the public.

The meeting was attended by Social Service Adviser Sharmeen S Murshid, officials from the Ministry of Social Welfare, Senior Secretary and SDG coordinator Lamiya Morshed, and Principal Secretary M Siraz Uddin Miah.
