Dhaka: Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus today emphasized the importance of accelerating the integrated development of Bangladesh's transport systems, including roads, railways, airways, and waterways, with a focus on minimizing environmental impacts. "We must accomplish this task without harming the environment. The river cannot be harmed, the water must be kept calm, and we must remember that water is a great resource for us," he stated during an inter-ministerial meeting at the State Guest House Jamuna.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the meeting focused on the marginal evaluation and strategic planning of the "Central Integrated Multimodal Transport Sector Master Plan of Bangladesh." The Chief Adviser highlighted the current disarray in the country's transport system and stressed the need for immediate reforms to prevent the system from becoming detrimental to the economy.
The meeting was attended by key figures including Planning Adviser Wahiduddin Mahmud, Road, Transport, and Bridges as well as Railways Adviser Muhammad Fouzul Kabir Khan, and other senior officials. The Roads and Highways Department presented a preliminary strategic plan aimed at coordinating existing communication networks and implementing necessary reforms. This plan suggests that improving and slightly expanding current railways, waterways, and highways could significantly enhance the sector.
Chief Adviser Yunus commended the officials for their efforts in developing a coordinated transport plan and emphasized the importance of aligning the plan with economic growth objectives. He also underscored the significance of considering regional and global communication systems in the planning process.
Dr. Sheikh Moinuddin, Chief Adviser's Special Assistant, mentioned the ongoing efforts to establish a comprehensive model for the transport sector to bolster the country's economic lifeline. Planning Adviser Wahiduddin Mahmud highlighted the need for quick action in regions where minor enhancements could integrate the entire area into the national connectivity framework.
Local Government Adviser Asif Mahmud Sajib Bhuiyan announced the initiative to create a "Planners' Wing" under the Local Government Division for more structured activities. Meanwhile, BIDA Chairman Chowdhury Ashik Mahmud Bin Harun disclosed plans to launch three new ports in Chattogram by 2030, stressing the urgency of establishing efficient road connectivity to these ports.
