Naogaon:Bus workers in Naogaon have continued their indefinite strike into its second day, causing widespread disruption for passengers across the district. The strike, which began on Sunday morning, has halted all bus services on internal routes to protest an alleged assault on a bus driver and a supervisor.
According to United News of Bangladesh, tensions flared after a confrontation at Baludanga Bus Stand on Saturday involving CNG-run auto-rickshaw drivers and bus workers over passenger pickups. The situation escalated when CNG drivers allegedly attacked bus driver Rubel Hossain and a supervisor at Nazipur Bus Stand, leading to the strike. Hossain is currently receiving treatment at Naogaon Sadar Hospital.
Bus workers are demanding justice for the assault and an end to the illegal operation of three-wheelers on highways. They highlight that current regulations prohibit auto-rickshaws from carrying passengers on long-distance routes outside towns between 800 am and 400 pm. The unrestricted movement of these vehicles is reportedly causing accidents and conflicts with transport workers.
The strike has forced passengers to seek alternative transportation, resulting in increased fares and extended travel times. Shafiqul Islam, a passenger from Niamatpur, reported significant delays and inconvenience in reaching Naogaon town for a court hearing.
Rafiqul Islam Chowdhury, general secretary of the Naogaon District Bus Owners' Group, stated that discussions with CNG owners have yet to yield a resolution. A formal complaint has been filed with the police, and the strike will persist until arrests are made.
Mohammad Monirul Islam, additional superintendent of police, confirmed that discussions with bus owners are ongoing, and legal proceedings have started. A meeting at the deputy commissioner's office involving bus and CNG associations is scheduled for today to address the issue.
