Dhaka: Buddhists across the country are set to celebrate Buddha Purnima tomorrow, marking the most sacred and significant religious festival with traditional enthusiasm and religious fervor.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Buddha Purnima, recognized as International Vesak Day by the United Nations in 2000, commemorates three pivotal events in the life of Buddha: the birth of Siddhartha Gautama, his attainment of supreme enlightenment, and his entry into Nirvana. This day holds immense significance for Buddhists worldwide.
In anticipation of the festival, President Mohammed Shahabuddin and Prime Minister Tarique Rahman extended greetings to the Buddhist community and the broader populace through separate messages. President Shahabuddin emphasized the teachings of Gautama Buddha, highlighting ideals of non-violence, equality, friendship, and compassion. He underscored the relevance of Buddha’s philosophy in today’s global context, suggesting it can help prevent wars and conflicts rooted in religion, caste, and ethnicity, thereby promoting global peace.
The President highlighted the government’s efforts to foster a non-discriminatory society and acknowledged the Buddhist community’s contributions to the country’s socio-economic development. He expressed hope that the community would continue to enrich itself by embracing Buddha’s ideals, contributing to an inclusive and prosperous Bangladesh.
Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, in his message, reiterated the importance of equal rights, security, and communal harmony. He emphasized the government’s commitment to maintaining a safe environment for all communities and highlighted Bangladesh as an example of communal harmony. The Prime Minister also stressed the importance of unity and tolerance in overcoming global conflicts and challenges, underscoring the values of peace and coexistence.
The President and Prime Minister extended their wishes for happiness, peace, and well-being to all on the occasion of Buddha Purnima. The day is a public holiday, with national and regional media planning special coverage. Celebrations are expected to include the hoisting of flags, chanting of sacred verses, offerings to Buddha statues, and various community activities such as meditation, blood donation, and a ‘peace procession’ organized by Bangladesh Bouddha Kristi Prachar Sangha.
The Bangladesh Buddhist Federation will host a daylong program at the International Buddhist Monastery, with notable participation from figures like Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir. Celebrations will also occur in Buddhist-populated regions, including Chattogram, Rangamati, and Bandarban, among others.
