Dhaka: A group of female students from Dhaka University organized a broom procession on campus on Sunday, protesting against the derogatory remarks about women made by Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Shafiqur Rahman on the X (formerly Twitter) platform.
According to United News of Bangladesh, the event took place in the afternoon in front of the Raju Memorial Sculpture on the university campus. During the rally, speakers called for a public apology from Shafiqur Rahman, stating that his comments demean women and undermine their societal roles.
Mukta Baroi, president of the Samajtantrik Chhatra Front, argued that using women as a political tool against national progress is a recurring tactic. She emphasized that history and recent events have demonstrated this pattern. Baroi insisted that working women deserve respect and dignity, and an apology should be issued for the offensive remarks, asserting that women will continue to advance despite such challenges.
Sheikh Tasnim Afroze Emi, former vice-president of Dhaka University’s Shamsunnahar Hall Students’ Union, accused certain political parties of seeking power by demeaning women. She criticized these parties for failing to undertake any significant responsibilities since independence, beyond engaging in hypocrisy.
Chhatra Federation leader Shima Akter highlighted the growing issue of online harassment faced by women in Bangladesh when advocating for women’s rights. She claimed that leaders and activists from a specific political party are targeting women on social media through fake and bot accounts.
