Dhaka: Health and Family Welfare Minister Sardar Md Sakhawat Hossain today emphasized the irreplaceable role of mother’s milk in a child’s physical and mental development, highlighting its unique nutritional value. Speaking at the inauguration of National Nutrition Week 2026 at the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery auditorium, Hossain stated that mother’s milk is essential for building a healthy nation, as vitamins or supplementary food alone cannot suffice.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the minister underscored the importance of breastfeeding immediately after birth due to its essential components that boost immunity. He urged nutrition workers to raise awareness by visiting homes and advocated for exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months, followed by nutritious complementary foods alongside breast milk up to two years.

Hossain pointed out that not everything can be achieved with medicine alone, stressing the importance of awareness through counselling. He noted that nutrition enhances not only physical growth but also intelligence and performance. Referring to the recent measles situation, he highlighted the increasing complications among children caused by malnutrition, emphasizing the need for adequate nutrition and breastfeeding.

Addressing parents, Hossain advised ensuring proper nutrition while focusing on children’s lifestyle and eating habits. He recommended reducing reliance on fast food and promoting a balanced diet, including vegetables, fish, and meat. He expressed optimism that increased awareness through collective efforts would lead to a healthy, strong, and talented generation.
