Dhaka:Bangladesh's geographical boundary with India is now under advanced technological surveillance and communication systems, alongside traditional patrolling methods, to prevent cross-border smuggling, drug trafficking, and trespassing.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the paramilitary force Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) is expanding its operational capabilities along the border, which stretches across thousands of kilometers, through increased use of modern technology. This includes complementing conventional patrols with advanced monitoring and communication systems.
Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) cameras, thermal imaging, night-vision devices, drones, radars, and digital communication equipment are enhancing border security. These technologies help detect suspicious movements and deter cross-border crimes such as smuggling, drug trafficking, and unlawful entry.
Lt Col Md Mahbub Murshed Rahman, Director of Operations at the BGB Headquarters, emphasized the integration of technology-based surveillance with conventional patrols to make border security more effective. He noted that CCTV and remote-monitoring cameras allow BGB personnel to observe activities in designated areas, while thermal imaging helps detect heat signatures in darkness and low-visibility conditions. Night-vision devices also facilitate surveillance and patrol operations after dark.
Drones provide additional capabilities for monitoring vast and inaccessible border areas, including rivers and chars, by collecting aerial information on local conditions. Radars and sensor-based systems assist in detecting movement in specific operational contexts. Modern radio and digital communication systems enable rapid coordination among personnel in the field.
Lt Col Mahbub Murshed highlighted that technology enhances rather than replaces the role of border guards. Trained personnel, local knowledge, effective use of intelligence, and timely decision-making remain crucial for ensuring border security. He also stressed the importance of proper installation, regular maintenance, reliable power and communication infrastructure, and skilled operators to ensure effective use of surveillance equipment. Additionally, data security, responsible use of technology, and compliance with laws and human rights principles are essential.
BGB Public Relations Officer Md Shariful Islam mentioned that the force is committed to using modern technology and infrastructure as needed to safeguard the frontiers, protect border communities, and combat cross-border crimes. The ongoing modernization efforts include technology deployment, personnel training, and improvements in border management to protect the country's sovereignty and border security.
