Body of BSMRSTU female student recovered, husband detained

The body of a female student of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Science and Technology University (BSMRSTU) was recovered from her rented house in Sadar upazila of Gopalganj on Tuesday, police said.

The 22-year-old Rikta Aktar was a second-year Political Science student of the university and wife of 26-year-old Rasel Mandal, also a fourth year Agriculture student of the same institution.

Both hail from Jhenaidah district.

They started living at the rented house in Nabinbagh area under the Sadar upazila of Gopalganj after getting married without consents from the families on February 23 last year.

Rasel said his wife Rikta had been fed-up over phone calls and messages from an unknown girl to his mobile phone for the last few days. Rikta also damaged his mobile phone over the matter.

“I had no trouble with Rikta after giving the unknown mobile phone number to her and other friends to identify its user,” he said.

Rikta came out of the house around 10am to have her tuitions, he said, adding that he found the doors of the house were unlocked upon his arrival around 2pm.

Later, he noticed that Rikta was hanging from the ceiling fan with her scarf and immediately brought her down.

Jabed Masud, officer-in-charge of Gopalganj Sadar police station, said on information they recovered the body from the house and sent it to the district’s Sadar Hospital morgue for autopsy.

Her husband Rasel was detained to interrogate in this connection, he said, adding that the reason for the death will be known after getting the autopsy report.

The girl might have died by suicide over family feud with her husband who allegedly maintained illegal relationship with other girls, the OC suspected.
