DHAKA, Feb 10, 2017 (BSS)- Awami League Presidium Member Mohammed Nasim today said BNP is out to get benefit through creating controversy over the newly formed Election Commission (EC).
"BNP leaders usually react very negatively at first . . . But if BNP wins in polls they keep mum while BNP loses in election they allege vote-rigging," he said while speaking at a memorial meeting on veteran parliamentarian AL leader Suranjit Sengupta at the Jatiya Press club here.
Nasim, also the health and family welfare minister, said the newly formed EC even did not start functioning, but BNP is trying to create controversy over EC for its own political interest.
"BNP is criticising the new EC only to put pressure on the government. It's nothing but a political technique indeed," Nasim added.
Speaking on the occasion, Shipping Minister Shajahan Khan urged all to remain alert against the forces who wanted to do revolution by creating militant forces.
He also stressed the need for united efforts to curb the militancy and uphold the spirit of Liberation War.
Food Minister Advocate Quamrul Islam said, "There is no scope to represent in the Jatiya Sangsad without taking part in the polls . . . And BNP has no alternative to contest in the upcoming polls."
The AL leaders paid rich tributes to the late leader Suranjit Sengupta saying that his death was really an irreparable loss in the political arena.
He said the EC will perform in accordance with the law and no technique will bring benefit for them.
Bangabandhu Sangskritik Jote (BSJ) organised the discussion with its Vice-President Syed Hasan Imam in the chair. Pro Vice-Chancellor of Dhaka University Prof Dr Akhtaruzzaman also spoke on the occasion.
