Dhaka: BNP today called on the Election Commission (EC) to play a firm and lawful role in ensuring that the upcoming national parliamentary elections are held in a fair, free, impartial, and peaceful manner. BNP standing committee member and Chairman of the party’s Election Steering Committee, Nazrul Islam Khan, made the remarks while speaking to journalists after a meeting with Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) A. M. M. Nasiruddin at the Election Building in Agargaon.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Nazrul Islam Khan emphasized the need for the Election Commission to strictly fulfill its legal responsibilities to conduct the election without bias. He expressed concern about certain individuals making irresponsible remarks that violate the electoral code of conduct. Khan underscored the importance of adhering to electoral laws and ensuring these are strictly monitored and enforced.
The veteran BNP leader stressed that the Election Commission must avoid any perception of bias towards any party or candidate. He noted that there was no current indication that the election process would face obstruction, given the participants’ commitment to restoring democracy. Khan expressed confidence that the election would proceed without disruption and expected a significant victory for his party.
Khan addressed the logistical challenge of transporting ballot boxes, particularly to remote polling centers. He stated that the BNP had requested transparent ballot boxes be used and kept in open areas under the supervision of polling agents, rather than in the custody of presiding officers.
He also touched on potential militant threats, suggesting that such concerns are often politically exaggerated. Khan emphasized the need for public awareness and resistance, alongside law enforcement efforts, to prevent militancy and maintain election integrity. He thanked the media for its role in protecting democracy and expressed hope for continued collaboration.
The meeting with Chief Election Commissioner A. M. M. Nasiruddin and EC Senior Secretary Akhtar Ahmed also included BNP members Ismail Zabihullah, Dr. Zakaria, and Shyhrul Kabir Khan.
