Dhaka: BNP Standing Committee Member Begum Selima Rahman today emphasized that the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has always championed the dignity, rights, and empowerment of women, earning the trust and support of women across the nation. She articulated these views while addressing a protest rally organized by Jatiyatabadi Mohila Dal in front of the party’s central office at Nayapaltan in the city.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Rahman highlighted the vital role women play in the development of the country, stressing that no nation can progress by undermining half of its population. She expressed concern over attempts by certain groups to use religion as a means to erode women’s dignity, labeling these efforts as extremely alarming.
Rahman, serving as the chief guest, noted that the day’s rally was not merely a political protest but a social and moral demonstration against disrespectful remarks and negative attitudes towards women. She invoked the teachings of Islam and the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), who first established the social status and rights of women, to underline her point about the importance of women’s rights.
Reflecting on the legacy of Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman, Selima Rahman praised his efforts to integrate women into the mainstream of education, employment, and development. She recalled his belief that women, like the motherland, are sacred and should be integral partners in nation-building.
During BNP’s tenure, Rahman stated, rural women were afforded opportunities in education and employment, significantly contributing to the country’s economy. She pointed out that women are actively participating across various sectors-from parliament to administration, education, health, and the economy.
Addressing those who criticize women working outside the home, Rahman reminded them that millions of women are working with dignity, supporting their families, and advancing society. She urged everyone to raise their voices to protect the rights and dignity of women, declaring women not just family members, but national assets.
The rally was attended by BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi, Jatiyatabadi Mohila Dal Central Committee President Afroza Abbas, General Secretary Sultana Ahmed, and other party leaders from both central and metropolitan levels.
