Thakurgaon: BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir today stated that the party is committed to avoiding a politics of revenge and does not intend to engage in harassment lawsuits akin to those associated with the previous Awami League (AL) regime.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Fakhrul made these remarks as the chief guest at a view exchange meeting held at Shapla Government Primary School ground in Mohammadpur Union under Thakurgaon Sadar Upazila. Fakhrul emphasized the party's focus on peace, prosperity, and development, quoting Desh Netri Begum Khaleda Zia's statement from August 5 of the previous year, which underscored a forward-looking vision for Bangladesh.
He further addressed Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, asserting that historical evidence shows oppression, torture, or intimidation have never successfully subdued the people. Fakhrul urged the Prime Minister to acknowledge and apologize for past mass killings and atrocities, taking responsibility for these actions.
The BNP Secretary General also criticized certain political factions for allegedly deceiving the public under the guise of the PR system, suggesting that these tactics are intended to undermine democratic processes. He highlighted that these strategies are essentially conspiracies aimed at eradicating democracy.
Fakhrul advocated for a national referendum and parliamentary elections to be held concurrently, allowing citizens to freely express their opinions. He indicated that the BNP supports such measures as a means of reinforcing democratic practices.
The meeting was chaired by former district BNP vice president Md. Al Mamun Alam and included the participation of district BNP president Mirza Faisal Amin, general secretary Md. Poigam Ali, along with other party leaders and activists.
