Dhaka: Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir today stated that the BNP does not fear reform initiatives, but rather welcomes them. Speaking as the chief guest at a memorial and discussion event at the National Press Club, Fakhrul emphasized the party's openness to change.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the event was organized by the Shafiul Bari Memorial Council to commemorate the fifth death anniversary of Shafiul Bari Babu, the former central general secretary of the Jatiyatabadi Swechchasebak Dal. Fakhrul highlighted that reform efforts began with the BNP and expressed optimism about the agreement among political parties on reforms in 12 fundamental areas.
Fakhrul also extended gratitude to Dr. Ali Riaz and his team for their continuous efforts in the reform process. He addressed criticisms faced by the BNP regarding its stance on reforms, asserting that the party initiated the idea of reform. Fakhrul referenced historical contexts, underscoring the role of Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman in restoring multi-party democracy from the one-party BaKSAL rule established by Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
In his concluding remarks, Fakhrul reiterated the BNP's commitment to reforms, expressing satisfaction over the consensus reached among political parties on key areas for reform.
