Dhaka: Prime Minister's Adviser and BNP Standing Committee member Ruhul Kabir Rizvi on Monday stated that the BNP-led government assumed control of the country amidst a 'devastated' situation and is actively working to reconstruct the state from the remnants left by previous administrations. Rizvi made these remarks during a press conference marking the 180th day of the government in office, held at the Prime Minister's Office in Tejgaon.
According to United News of Bangladesh, Rizvi emphasized that the current administration inherited a nation plagued by enforced disappearances, killings, and pervasive corruption. He described an environment of disorder and unpredictability, where extrajudicial killings were rampant and politically motivated. Rizvi highlighted that bodies, including those of upazila chairmen, former MPs, student leaders, and youth leaders, were regularly found in canals, rivers, and ponds, targeting dissenting voices from the previous regime.
Rizvi pointed to the significant political shift achieved on August 5 through a massive movement, yet acknowledged that the economic and sectoral legacy could not be rebuilt overnight. He lamented the looting of Sonali Bank, BASIC Bank, and others, and criticized the mega projects of the past as avenues for massive corruption.
Despite the challenges posed by various natural disasters and international developments, Rizvi affirmed the government's commitment to fulfilling the promises made by Prime Minister and BNP Chairman Tarique Rahman. He highlighted ongoing efforts in social protection, infrastructure, education, and healthcare to maintain public welfare.
Rizvi underscored the government's responsibility to confront challenges such as pandemics and natural disasters while continuing to serve the people. He described Monday's press conference as part of the accountability process, emphasizing the importance of transparency through parliament, journalists, and mass media.
He concluded by stating that the government would continue to update journalists on its progress and activities across various sectors and ministries during its initial six months in power.
