BHAIROB: Shipping Adviser Brig General (rtd) M Sakhawat Hossain announced today that Bhairob river port is slated for an upgrade to meet international standards, backed by financial support from the World Bank. "As Bhairob River Port is one of the oldest and most significant ports of the country, the government has taken initiatives to upgrade the port into an international-standard port," he stated while inspecting the current upgrade activities at the port this morning. According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the upgrade work on the port is expected to commence in the coming days and aims for completion by 2025. Upon completion, the improvements are anticipated to help prevent erosion of the Meghna River and contribute to the river's protection. The initiative is also expected to generate significant employment opportunities. As part of the upgrade, three jetties will be constructed to facilitate the anchoring of launches and speedboats, as well as the loading and unloading of goods from vessels. The de velopment will necessitate the demolition of adjacent shops, but the government assures that shop owners with proper documentation will receive adequate compensation. The inspection of the upgrade activities was attended by Chairman of Bangladesh Inland Water Transports Authority (BIWTA) Commodore Arif Ahmed, BIWTA Project Director Aiyub Ali, and Bhairob Upazila Nirbahi Officer Shabnom Sharmin, among others.
