Dhaka: Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) has seized various types of smuggled goods and contraband drugs worth over Taka 171.60 crore from different parts of the country, including border areas, said a BGB press release. The extensive haul included a range of items such as gold, silver, textiles, cosmetics, electronic goods, and a variety of other commodities and narcotics.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the seized contraband includes 6.356 kg of gold, 1.650 kg of silver, 9,248 saris, 13,558 garments, 11,461 ready-made garments, 1,286 meters of fabric, 3,91,793 cosmetics, and 2,952 pieces of imitation jewelry. Additionally, fireworks, timber, tea leaves, betel nut, coal, and other materials were confiscated. The BGB also seized mobile phones, vehicle parts, and currency including 73,540 Indian rupees and 30,000 US dollars. A variety of vehicles, including trucks, pickups, and motorcycles, were also captured.
The BGB personnel seized two pistols, two magazines, 100 rounds of ammunition, and three other weapons. A significant amount of narcotics was also seized, including over 20 lakh Yaba tablets, 4.663 kg of heroin, and thousands of bottles of Phensedyl, liquor, and other intoxicants.
A total of 198 smugglers were arrested alongside 1,197 Bangladeshi citizens and nine Indian citizens for illegal border crossings and involvement in drug trafficking. Legal actions have been initiated against those apprehended. Furthermore, 805 Myanmar citizens were returned to their country after attempting to enter Bangladesh illegally.
