A border outpost (BOP) commander of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) was killed in an attack by wild elephants in Naikhongchhari of Bandarban Tuesday night.
The deceased was identified as Junior Commissioned Officer Md Abdul Mannan, commander of Bhalluk Khaiya BOP.
On information that smugglers were bringing cattle into Bangladesh from Myanmar, a 10-member BGB patrol team led by Abdul Mannan conducted a raid in the border area and seized three cows, Md Shariful Islam, public relations officer of BGB Headquarters, said.
On their way back to the BOP, a herd of wild elephants got in their way at 9pm. Abdul Mannan died on the spot after being crushed by an elephant while other BGB members managed to run away.
On information, the commander of Ramu BGB and the commander of BGB 11 Naikhongchhari rushed to the spot and recovered Abdul Mannan’s body.
Abdul Mannan was from Cumilla and the father of two children. He had been serving BGB for the last 34 years.
BGB Director General Major General Shakil Ahmed Wednesday expressed shock and deep grief at the death of Abdul Mannan and extended his heartfelt sympathy to the officer and his family.
