Dhaka: Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission (BERC) today withdrew its order to increase electricity tariff for residential customers using up to 75 units. The decision comes as a relief to many residents who had been facing the prospect of higher electricity costs.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the BERC announcement stated that the price for lifeline customers, who use up to 50 units, will remain at Tk 4.63. Similarly, the previous rate for users consuming up to 75 units will stay at Tk 5.26. The tariff for the lifeline bracket, covering 0-50 units, and the residential first phase, covering 0-75 units, will apply to all electricity distribution companies from June.
Earlier, on Wednesday, June 3, the BERC had announced an increase in electricity prices, raising the cost from Tk 4.63 to Tk 5.32 per unit for users of up to 50 units, and from Tk 5.26 to Tk 6.18 per unit for users of up to 75 units in the first phase. The withdrawal of this increase reflects a reduction in the average electricity tariff at the retail level, bringing it down by Tk 0.23 from Tk 10.63 to Tk 10.40.
