Bangladeshi expats celebrated Bengali New Year in New York's Times Square for the first time.

Marking the first day of Baishakh, Mangal Shobhayatra, a colorful procession, was held on Friday to wish humanity well, said a press release here today.

Ekushey Padak Award Winning Dance Artiste and Freedom Fighter Laila Hasan was the convener of this historic annual event.

Independence Award winner and eminent Bangladeshi Rabindra Sangeet singer Rezwana Chowdhury Bannya inaugurated the Mangal Shobhayatra by joining the event from Bangladesh.

General Secretary of NRB World Wide Tofajjal Liton, Director of Sotokonthe Borsho Boron (welcoming of Bengali New Year with chorus song in 100-voice), Talukder Tapas and President of NRB World Wide Biswajit Saha spoke on the occasion.

For the first time in the history of the Bengali nation, the Bangladeshi immigrants in the United States welcomed the Bengali New Year with the sunrise at New York's Time Square.

Hundreds of people who love Bengali culture gathered and welcomed the Bengali New Year with songs at sunrise. Bangladeshi immigrants from different states of the United States have joined this event. Everyone had a spontaneous attempt to make themselves a part of history.
