Dhaka: Chief Adviser (CA) Professor Muhammad Yunus today highlighted the transformative impact of Rokeya Sakhawat Hossain, widely recognized as Begum Rokeya, in advancing women's liberation and human rights. 'Rokeya Sakhawat Hossain brought the women's community from darkness to light through a massive social movement for women's liberation and human rights,' he remarked in a message marking Begum Rokeya Day, which will be observed tomorrow.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Dr. Yunus expressed his satisfaction that Begum Rokeya Day is being celebrated annually in remembrance of Begum Rokeya, the trailblazer for women's education in the nation. The observance falls on December 9 each year. He emphasized the enduring importance of her contributions to establishing women in positions of dignity and respect. 'Today, on the occasion of Begum Rokeya Day, I pay deep respect to the memory of this great woman,' he stated.

Dr. Yunus stressed the fundamental role of education in enhancing the lives of women who were marginalized within the conservative social framework of the nineteenth century. He noted that Begum Rokeya courageously advocated for the expansion of women's education based on this understanding. Continuing her mission, the interim government is actively pursuing women's empowerment.

He outlined various initiatives by the Ministry of Women and Children Affairs, including the Vulnerable Women Benefit (VWB) programme targeting the socio-economic upliftment of underprivileged rural women. Other initiatives encompass financial support for impoverished pregnant mothers and low-income working mothers, along with nationwide microcredit schemes to foster self-employment among grassroots women.

Further support includes initiatives to nurture women entrepreneurs within marginalized communities and the operation of hostels providing safe housing for employed women. Additionally, a 24/7 toll-free hotline (109) has been established to offer immediate assistance through the Quick Response Team as part of efforts to combat violence against women and children.

Dr. Yunus extended his congratulations to recipients of the Begum Rokeya Padak for their contributions to women's rights and socio-economic progress, inspired by Begum Rokeya's example. He concluded by wishing success for all programs organized in observance of Begum Rokeya Day 2025.
