Begum Khaleda Zia Honored at Chief Justice’s Supreme Court Reception

Dhaka: BNP Chairperson and former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia was remembered with deep respect at a reception accorded to Chief Justice Zubayer Rahman Chowdhury at the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court today. The event took place at Courtroom No. 1 of the Appellate Division at 10:30 am, organized by the Attorney General’s Office and the Supreme Court Bar Association.



According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Begum Khaleda Zia passed away on December 30, 2025, at 6:00 am while undergoing treatment at Evercare Hospital in Dhaka. She was laid to rest the following day with full state honors beside her husband, Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman. During the reception, Additional Attorney General Mohammad Arshadur Rouf, currently serving as the acting Attorney General, paid tribute to Khaleda Zia, acknowledging her contributions as a three-time former Prime Minister and a national leader. He expressed his deepest respect and prayed for her eternal peace.



From the Supreme Court Bar Association, President Barrister A M Mahbubuddin Khokon highlighted Khaleda Zia’s significant role in advocating for the independence of the judiciary and the establishment of democracy in the country. He noted her long struggle and affirmed her lasting impact on the nation’s democratic framework, expressing profound respect for her legacy.



The event witnessed the presence of judges from both divisions of the Supreme Court, senior lawyers, journalists, and officials of the Supreme Court. The reception also marked a significant occasion following Justice Zubayer Rahman Chowdhury’s oath-taking as the 26th Chief Justice of the country on December 28.
