Rangpur: A court has sent Begum Rokeya University unit joint general secretary of the banned Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL), Imran Chowdhury Akash, to jail following a three-day remand in the Abu Sayeed murder case.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the investigation officer of the case, PBI Rangpur Superintendent of Police (SP) ABM Jakir Hossain, confirmed the development. On the previous Thursday, PBI SP Zakir Hossain presented the accused, Imran Chowdhury Akash, before the Rangpur Metropolitan Court, requesting a four-day remand for interrogation related to the investigation of the Abu Sayeed murder case.

The court, presided over by Judge Asaduzzaman, granted a three-day remand for questioning. Subsequently, Imran Chowdhury Akash was transferred to the PBI office under tight security for further interrogation.

Akash was initially arrested by Jamalpur police on February 15 from Gangapara village in the Islampur upazila of Jamalpur district. The arrest is part of the ongoing investigation into the murder of Abu Sayeed, a student of the English Department at Begum Rokeya University, who was shot dead by the police on July 16 last year during the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement.

In response to the incident, Abu Sayeed’s elder brother, Ramzan Ali, filed a murder case, which has led to the current legal proceedings involving Imran Chowdhury Akash.
