BanglaFact of the Press Institute Bangladesh (PIB) has identified baseless propaganda in Indian media over the death of temple attendant Nayan Das in Cox’s Bazar. Nayan Das, aged 35, went missing on April 19, and his hanging body was discovered three days later in a remote hilly area within Cox’s Bazar Sadar upazila. The circumstances of his disappearance remain unclear, with police stating that the family has not filed any complaint or named any suspect.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, several Indian media outlets, including India Today and News Nine, alongside some X accounts, have portrayed the incident as a communal killing, despite lacking evidence. BanglaFact’s investigation revealed that neither the family of the deceased, the police, nor local Hindu organizations have confirmed any communal motive in the case of Nayan Das’s death.

Furthermore, the investigation highlighted that India Today had a history of spreading misinf
ormation by mischaracterizing unrelated incidents as communal violence. This recent instance adds to concerns about the dissemination of unverified information and its potential consequences in stirring unnecessary communal tensions.
