BARD Observes 27th Death Anniversary of Akhter Hameed Khan

Comilla:BARD The Bangladesh Academy for Rural Development (BARD) commemorated the 27th death anniversary of Dr. Akhtar Hameed Khan, a noted sociologist and pioneer in rural development, with various programs.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, BARD officials and employees paid their respects by placing wreaths at Khan's mural. Additionally, a milad mahfil and special prayers were conducted at the BARD Jame Mosque in his honor.

Dr. Khan was instrumental in developing sustainable rural development models which significantly improved the living standards of rural communities. His leadership in the 1960s led to the creation of the 'Comilla Model,' which gained international acclaim.

Born in Agra, India, on July 15, 1914, Khan pursued a master's degree in English literature and joined the Imperial Civil Service of British India. His experiences during the 1943 famine prompted him to resign and work as a laborer before transitioning to academia and rural development.

Khan's contributions to research and practical rural development programs established him as a prominent figure, with his Comilla Model being a significant milestone in Bangladesh's rural development history. He passed away in the United States on October 9, 1999.
