Dhaka: Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir today asserted that the political trajectory of Bangladesh will be determined solely by its citizens. "Bangladesh Nationalist Party is committed to upholding democracy, accountability, rule of law, good governance, justice and humanity. We want to ensure that Bangladesh's political fate will be decided only by its people," he stated.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Mirza Fakhrul made these remarks before attending an Iftar event with foreign diplomats stationed in Dhaka at the Westin Hotel. He emphasized the importance of international respect for the principles of 'non-interference', 'sovereignty', and 'peaceful resolution of disputes'. Fakhrul expressed hope for collaboration with global partners to achieve regional progress through democracy and liberal trade, fostering greater people-to-people connections.
Highlighting the values of justice, resilience, and unity, the BNP Secretary General remarked, "The people of Bangladesh deserve a future free from fear, oppression and political uncertainty." At the Iftar, Fakhrul was joined by British High Commissioner Sarah Cook, former US Ambassador John Danilowicz, Pakistani Ambassador Syed Ahmed Maruf, and Turkish Ambassador Ramis Sen, alongside diplomats from countries such as the USA, Germany, China, India, the European Union, and others.
The event was attended by representatives from various international organizations, including several UN agencies. Mirza Fakhrul, representing party Chairperson Khaleda Zia and Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman, extended greetings to the diplomats and engaged in exchanges before the Iftar.
Key BNP figures such as Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain, Jamir Uddin Cirkar, Mirza Abbas, among others, were present. The gathering also included prominent academics, retired military officials, and media editors from leading publications like Prothom Alo, Daily Star, and bdnews24.com.
Following the Iftar and Maghrib prayers, attendees continued with a dinner, marking an evening of diplomatic engagement and dialogue.
