Dhaka:Bangladesh's State Minister for Foreign Affairs, Humaiun Kobir, emphasized that the country signs agreements based on its own needs and interests, not to satisfy external parties, as he spoke at a program marking a milestone in Bangladesh-European Union relations and the completion of discussions on acquiring Airbus aircraft for Biman Bangladesh Airlines.

According to United News of Bangladesh, Biman, the national flag carrier of Bangladesh, has signed a purchase agreement with Airbus to acquire 10 aircraft, including four Airbus A350-900 widebody aircraft for long-haul international flights and six Airbus A321neo single-aisle aircraft for regional operations. This agreement represents a significant step in Biman's fleet modernization and long-term growth strategy.

The Ministry of Civil Aviation and Tourism's preliminary roadmap indicates that these next-generation aircraft will join Biman's fleet by approximately 2033. The new aircraft are expected to enhance Biman's capacity for long-haul and regional transport with fuel-efficient technology, strengthening the airline's route network and competitiveness in regional and global aviation markets.

Kobir stated that the Airbus deal was signed to meet Bangladesh's aviation needs and not to please any ambassadors or friends. He reiterated that the government, under Prime Minister Tarique Rahman's leadership, will pursue deals with Airbus or any other partner when there is a sound business case based on the country's needs.

The signing ceremony was attended by several dignitaries, including Civil Aviation and Tourism Minister M Rashiduzzaman Millat and representatives from Biman Bangladesh Airlines and Airbus. European Union and various European country ambassadors were also present.

Kobir congratulated Biman, the European Union, and Airbus for reaching this milestone, noting that investing in advanced aircraft strengthens Bangladesh's global connectivity and standing. He also highlighted the strength of Bangladesh's friendships across Europe and expressed confidence in future business opportunities with the European Union.
