An 18-year-old young man was shot dead allegedly by Indian Khasi people along the Companyganj bordering area on Saturday.

The deceased was identified as Jain Uddin, son of Nur Mia of Banpur Adarsha village in the upazila.

Sukanta Chakraborty, officer-in-charge of Companyganj Police Station, said Jain along with three more people went to the bordering area to collect some logs at No 1257 main pillar of Utma border.

At one stage, the Indian Khasi people opened fire on them, leaving Jain dead on the spot.

The Khasi people are an ethnic group of Meghalaya in north-eastern India with a significant population in the bordering state of Assam, and in certain parts of Bangladesh. The ones on the Indian side have recently taken to forming vigilante groups against alleged Bangladeshi intrusions across the border.

Police recovered the body of Jain and sent it to Sylhet Osmani Medical college and Hospital.
