Dhaka: Home Affairs Minister Salahuddin Ahmed expressed hope on Sunday that India would extradite former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to Bangladesh under the existing extradition treaty between the two nations. Speaking at a dialogue organized by the Bangladesh Secretariat Reporters Forum (BSRF) at the Secretariat, Ahmed emphasized the importance of legal procedures in ensuring her return to face trial.
According to United News of Bangladesh, Salahuddin responded to inquiries regarding media reports about Sheikh Hasina’s possible return and discussions of a travel pass. He confirmed that Bangladesh has consistently communicated with the Indian government through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to request her extradition.
In addition to discussing extradition matters, Salahuddin also highlighted the government’s initiative to introduce a new law aimed at controlling gambling, betting, and online gambling activities. The current gambling law, which dates back to 1867, is considered outdated. Salahuddin announced plans to present the draft of a modernized legal framework in the next parliamentary session, aiming to address emerging crimes like online gambling.
The dialogue was chaired by BSRF President Masudul Haque, with Chief Information Officer Syed Abdal Ahmed and BSRF General Secretary Ubaidullah Badal playing significant roles in the event’s proceedings.
