Dhaka: Prime Minister’s Foreign Affairs Adviser Humaiun Kobir has stated that Bangladesh is keen to maintain relations with the international community based on mutual respect, balance, and national interests. He emphasized this approach during his speech as the chief guest at an event organized by the Bangladesh Institute of Peace and Security Studies (BIPSS) at a city hotel.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Kobir highlighted that under the “Bangladesh First” policy, the government will pursue a multi-dimensional and flexible foreign policy that is not centered on any single country. He noted the rapidly changing world order, emphasizing that the dominance of a single power is ending, leading to new political and economic realities globally. In this shifting landscape, Bangladesh aims for a strategically flexible and balanced foreign policy, fostering constructive relations with all countries without dependence on any single nation.
The government’s main objective, he asserted, will be to make independent decisions while safeguarding national interest and sovereignty. Economic diplomacy, he said, will be a top priority, focusing on expanding export markets, attracting diverse foreign investments, ensuring energy security, and enhancing regional trade and connectivity.
Kobir also mentioned plans to position Bangladesh as an economic bridge connecting South Asia, Southeast Asia, and the broader Indo-Pacific region. He emphasized Bangladesh’s support for an inclusive, open, and cooperative approach in the Indo-Pacific, participating actively in initiatives related to trade, connectivity, maritime security, and sustainable development.
Regarding climate change, Kobir stated that Bangladesh, as one of the worst climate victims, aims to lead global climate diplomacy, advocating for climate justice and fair financing. He stressed the importance of internal governance, democracy, and rule of law for international acceptance, asserting the government’s commitment to establishing a democratic environment, accountability, and good governance.
Kobir concluded by stating that Bangladesh will not return to authoritarianism and misrule, with aspirations to build a sovereign, economically strong, and globally respected nation. The event, chaired by BIPSS President Major General A N M Muniruzzaman, was attended by diplomats, academics, business representatives, and civil society members.
